Early life[ edit ] Shepherd was born on an American military base in Okinawa , Japan. His father worked in the Nike missile program and played the guitar. His family moved to Texas , then settled in Kingston, Washington , where Shepherd grew up. Shepherd became interested in music after listening to Johnny Cash on television, sitting as close to the speakers as possible.
When Shepherd asked his father for a guitar, his father complied only after insisting he must learn every chord in a large book with nothing but a guitar neck. Shepherd did so—with help from his cousin Ralph “Tony” McMullen—and his father bought him his first guitar. After graduating from high school, he worked as a carpenter and a laborer, and while playing in Tic Dolly Row with drummer friend Chad Channing , introduced him to Novoselic, who went on to bring Channing into his band Nirvana.
Shepherd would later travel with Nirvana on a tour leading up to the release of Nevermind , being a nominal second guitarist but not playing on stage. The band members liked Shepherd and his attitude, but given he did not know how to play the songs, they eventually picked bassist Jason Everman. Following the closure of the Louder Than Love tour in , Everman was fired, and the band contacted Shepherd to see if he could join the band. On his first recording with the band, the studio album Badmotorfinger , Shepherd took part in writing the following songs: Shepherd sang vocals and played guitar in Hater, in addition to writing several songs on the band’s first release, a self-titled album.

For years I have been very disappointed with the playability of new Gibson electric guitars, but have never really used any of their acoustic guitars. But, I recently had the opportunity to play a Gibson Hummingbird Pro EC acoustic-electric guitar for a few weeks, and thought I would share my thoughts on it, because it is a pretty neat guitar. These guitars are different than the traditional Hummingbird guitars. The Pro EC is a cutaway guitar a non-cutaway version is also available , and the body shape falls somewhere between a square-shoulder dreadnought like the Hummingbird Modern Classic and a round-shoulder dreadnought think J There is also no signature Hummingbird pickguard, so I am not even sure why they continue to call it one.
The body has a Sitka spruce top with solid mahogany sides and back and the whole thing is sprayed with a thin nitrocellulose vintage sunburst finish. The builders did a fantastic job on the rosette inlay, white must be made of 10 concentric pieces. Like their other models, the Pro EC has scalloped and radiused top bracing. And like the original Hummingbird and the original J , this model has an X brace to provide a balanced tone. As I said before it is a cutaway so there is really nice access to the frets that I never use.
The neck is the best part of this guitar, and it plays better than any new Les Paul I have tried — they got the frets level on this one and it is super comfortable and beefy. It has a glued dovetail joint with the body, so there are no bolts involved and it has a solid feel to it. There is a 1.

Rebelling against the music man Rebelling against the music man aka the big dogs Music nowadays is controlled by an idea. In fact, the idea has been dominated by a handful of music executives and marketers, which has trickled down to affect how musicians make music. The idea is to make people musicians based on research and sales.
My slippery slope that rings a lot of truth though These big dogs control what goes on the radio waves. Nearly every musician wants to sign with a major label. Hell, I would with the right contract terms…if they exist with these guys. When musicians sign up with the big dogs, they are for the most part employees and have to cooperate with their boss on how to make music.
Their boss will make decisions based on what will sell according to their market research.
