Steve Ecklund, from Alberta, Canada had killed the mountain lion in his home state on Sunday and is pictured grinning as its carcass is held to the camera. The co-host of the Canadian hunting show, The EDGE, is well-known for his killing of rams, lions, black bears and lions in Canada and North America and regularly posts updates of himself and his wife, Alison Ecklund, in hunting gear. Steve and Alison are both fiercely defended by an active pro-hunting community online, but in the UK, campaign group Hunt Saboteurs Association have called the sport ‘morally reprehensible’. On ‘The EDGE’s website, Steve is identified as a ‘fair chase hunter’ which means all hunting he participates in is purportedly ethical and all animals are free-ranging, so they aren’t confined by gates or barriers. In Alberta, Canada, hunters must hold a recreational hunting licence. The law states it is illegal to discharge a weapon at a big game animal while it is swimming, be accompanied by a dog while hunting big game or allow a dog to pursue big game during the winter season hunting season. A recent cancer survivor, the EDGE’s website claim hunting was a motivation for Steve as he recovered. In the images posted online, Steve poses alongside his friends and two beagles as the lion lies on its stomach with blood staining its fur. The pictures have whipped up debate online as some users claimed Steve is ‘vile’ while others congratulated him on the kill. A UK-based anti-hunting campaigner has also called Steve ‘morally reprehensible’ and termed the death of the mountain lion a ‘barbaric act’.

He was convicted in December of first-degree murder, along with other crimes, for the Montreal killing and dismemberment of university student Jun Lin. Magnotta’s profile, posted last month, quickly ignited controversy. It even prompted a reaction from the office of federal Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney, whose spokesman called the website “outrageous and offensive to victims of crime.
I found what I was looking for,” Fazzina said in a telephone interview Monday, as she read from the year-old’s letter. Fazzina, who declined to release the letter because Magnotta had labelled it “confidential,” said the note offered no additional details on why he decided to remove his profile. But she’s sure many people will be relieved he’s no longer on the website.
She was hit by a wave of criticism after the news broke. Many critics, she added, feared the online platform gave Magnotta, who has a reputation as an attention-seeker, exactly what he craved now that his high-profile trial is over. This is a human right that all of these inmates are entitled to. Blaney’s spokesman, Jeremy Laurin, wrote in an email at the time that the minister had asked Correctional Service Canada to explore all options to ensure “dangerous violent criminals” and “sexual predators” were not able to further exploit individuals.
Fazzina said she had yet to hear directly from the government after Magnotta’s profile was posted.

Once we overcome shyness or modesty, however, we almost all enjoy reminiscing. As the years advance, a “life review” is particularly rewarding, but at any age it can be a great pleasure and an amazing source of insights. If you’re one of the younger members of your family, take my word for it: You may not be eager to hear family stories now, but eventually you will. Having those voices on tape, having the stories behind those photographs preserved, is a far more meaningful legacy in the long term than most other physical legacies.
And in the short term the material can enliven a special occasion, such as a major anniversary, birthday, or memorial service. Indeed, one way to improve the care an elderly patient receives in a hospital or nursing home is to write a brief history of their life and tape it to the door, making them a person with a story and not just another old patient. An experienced interviewer with a good tape recorder can capture memories that your family will cherish for generations.
If someone in your family has stories to tell, and can’t tell them on their own, encourage them to work with an interviewer. Start with a family photo history, with captions! Make a CD of it for everyone in the family. Don’t put it off to the distant future. So often I hear people express regret about the stories they didn’t get and wish they had now.
